Aspartate beta-bulge
This motif consists of a half-turn that interrupts or precedes an amphipathic beta-strand. A single low psi angle occurs at a strictly conserved polar position in the turn -- usually an aspartate. There are non-polar sidechains one residue before the aspartate and two residues after it. The 1-4-6 pattern of non-polar residues, along with the conserved polar at position 2, defines the beta-bulge. This motif often follows the Type-1 Gly alpha-C-cap. |
