Aspartate beta-bulge

Backbone angles and sequence pattern for Asp beta-bulge

Superposition of the top scoring 30 true-positives

Cartoon showing conserved polar (green) and non-polar (purple) sidechains

This motif consists of a half-turn that interrupts or precedes an amphipathic beta-strand. A single low psi angle occurs at a strictly conserved polar position in the turn -- usually an aspartate. There are non-polar sidechains one residue before the aspartate and two residues after it. The 1-4-6 pattern of non-polar residues, along with the conserved polar at position 2, defines the beta-bulge. This motif often follows the Type-1 Gly alpha-C-cap.
