Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology and Image Processing

Involved Researcher: Dr. James Turner

Introduction: Nanotechnology is a relatively new field of science which is undergoing tremendous growth. It opens new ways of integrating fundamental research from the nanoscale. Dr. Turner studies biological systems using a nanotechnology "tool-set" with components fabricated on the scale of biological substructures. Such devices allow unprecedented power to study biological systems on the length and time scales of the phenomena under study.

Systems under investigation include the growth and development of neurons on surfaces with micrometer scale topography. Implantable devices to restore brain function lost to disease or trauma. Biosensors for the detection of cells and molecules are also being developed.
The other major component of Dr. Turner's research involves the application of three-dimensional light microscopy, especially confocal microscopy, to the study of the three-dimensional structure of biological specimens. This includes collaborative efforts with Dr. Barinath Roysam of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to develop automated image analysis tools.
